Bertil Björkman, born 1947, works today as a consultant focusing on marketing, organisation development and crises management. In addition he is a member of EDI Advisory Board, the board of Södertörns University, the board of the Vasa Museum fundraising organisation, the board of The Royal Academy of War Sciences and the board of AFCEA Sweden. He is also assigned to MAST technical committee.
Rear Admiral Björkman graduated from the Royal Naval Academy in 1971. During the 70’s he spent most of his time in various positions onboard surface attack units but also on icebreakers.
After graduation from the Defense and Staff College in 1984 he spent the following five years in the Navy HQ and the Joint Staff mainly in positions related to plans and policy.
After two years as commanding officer of a corvette squadron he was assigned to the Naval Command College, US Naval War college in Newport Rhode Island.
Back in Sweden he was appointed as commanding officer 1.submarine flotilla and thereafter as Director Plans and Policy, Navy Headquarters.
In 1996 he was promoted to Rear Admiral as he took the position as Director Naval Material Command in FMV (Defense Procurement Agency) where he only served for one year before he headed a major review on the FMV organisation. He was later Director Procurement in the new joint organisation.
In 2000 he took the position as Defense Attaché at the Swedish embassy in Washington DC where he stayed until he retired from the Armed forces in July 2005.
Rear Admiral Björkman is a fellow of The Royal Academy of War Sciences and chairs its’ Department of Naval Sciences. He is also a fellow of The Royal Academy of Naval Sciences and was its’ President for two years.
Rear Admiral Björkman is married to Marianne, dentist, and they have two sons.
